What are the aims of the project?

To build on and consolidate Faculty approaches to the design and use of online learning environments centred on collaborative approaches to learning through the development of new courses and the wider involvement of academic staff.

To provide an opportunity for the exploration of rich interactive approaches to learning in online settings.

To develop evaluation tools to allow the practice of learning and teaching online to be more fully evidence based.

What will be the outcomes of the project?

Outcome 1:     the development of 24 online courses using WebCT

Outcome 2:     establishment of procedures and templates to support the collaborative design of online course environments involving Faculty and LTU staff

Outcome 3:     preparation of shared templates supportive of good learning design and effective practice for rollout across other courses

Outcome 4:     increased staff expertise through involvement in appropriate staff development activities

Outcome 5:     development of exemplar online course materials based on rich interaction and collaborative learning for demonstrator purposes with other faculties

Outcome 6:     generation of rich learning interactions to support subsequent course evaluation and learning related research

List the relevant learning outcomes for the course(s) involved, indicating how the introduction of this project would help to achieve them:

Course descriptors with learning outcomes are available on request, the intention is to exploit the interactive features of the WebCT environment as fully as possible to support learning outcomes consistent with a model of learning which stresses participative, exploratory, active and reflective activities.

What benefits will result from this project:

For the students:

The student experience will be enhanced and extended across several dimensions including:

·       synchronous access

·       removal of geographical barriers to learning especially for those engaged in part time study at a distance

·       opportunities for enhanced interaction with other students and with tutors in support of learning

·       better engagement with learning materials within constructivist learning approaches

·       enhanced opportunities for personal reflection on learning and the application of learning to practice

For your Department/the University:

The opportunity to explore with fellow professionals in the LTU ways and means of developing online environments likely to support richer, deeper learning experiences for students

Exploitation of new markets for example by distance delivery of MEd and PGCE(P).

The enhancement of practice and the development of exemplar materials related to fully interactive online learning

For you:

Estimation of magnitude of project (by LTU):

Short (1 month)                             Medium (1 or 2 months)                                 Long (3+ months)

This proposal has been discussed with a member of the Learning Technology Unit.  I understand that if the project proposal goes ahead it will be a collaborative effort with the LTU, with my department being responsible for the academic content and the LTU providing pedagogical support and design and technical input.
